Looking for hEROs

Applications are now open to join the headspace Berri hERO group. hEROs are local young people aged 16-25 who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of other young people by providing advice and guidance to headspace Berri and by creating projects, events and activities that support young people’s wellbeing. Some members of hERO may have experienced their own struggles and other members may have never experienced mental ill health, but all share a commitment to advocate for youth mental health in the Riverland.

Past hERO groups have hosted high teas and scavenger hunts, represented headspace Berri at community events and education presentations and undertaken training in youth mental health, advocacy and media relations. Every group of young people involved with hERO makes it their own and headspace Berri is excited to welcome new hEROs to join us in creating a healthy Riverland.

“We believe it is important to involve young people in the planning of youth participation strategies and activities, to provide a greater sense of ownership and a genuine partnership. We want headspace centres to be inviting to young people and hERO group is one of the ways we do this,” says headspace Manager Gemma Nickolai.

Applications from young people aged 16-25 to join hERO group in 2021 are being accepted on a rolling basis from today. Apply here.

As a member of hERO, young people will:

  • be a volunteer member of an inclusive and optimistic team of other young people
  • attend regular meetings and represent headspace Berri in the community
  • have access to relevant training and mentoring
  • develop mini-projects, events and activities that support mental health in our community
  • be asked to provide their unique feedback and insights on the work of headspace Berri

“Being part of the hERO Group has enabled me to get out of my comfort zone and have the privilege of doing some online trainings. It has taught me to understand that each person has their own opinion and to accept everyone’s decision making. I have enjoyed being able to have my own voice and bring my ideas to the group,” Says hERO member Chloe
