headspace Horsham receives funding for young people

Headspace Horsham will receive $10,000 in funding to support young people in the region.

The funding is part of the Healthy Equal Youth Project, which helps raise awareness, promote diversity, eliminate stigma and discrimination, and improve the overall mental health of young LGBTIQ+ people.

Headspace Horsham LGBTI youth support worker Maddi Ostapiw said the funding would enable a group of young LGBTIQ+ people in the region to attend the Minus 18 Queer Formal in Melbourne in April.

“The formal is an event for more than 500 LGBTIQ+ young people where they can enjoy a sit-down dinner, live music, listen to inspiring speeches and dance the night away,” she said.

“Young people who attend can be comfortable expressing themselves, wearing clothes that align with their gender or sexual identity. Girls can wear a suit if they’d like to.

“Most importantly it’s about having a fantastic night out and being with people who support each other in a safe environment.”

Minus 18 Queer Formal was born out of a need for young LGBTIQ people to have a space for themselves, where they can be themselves.

“We are still finalising details but we hope to have up to 30 spaces available for young people from the Horsham area,” Ms Ostapiw said.

”If you’re interested, keep an eye on the headspace Horsham Facebook page for more details in the near future.”

Maddi said the funding would assist with travel costs, accommodation and meals for the young people and their carers.
